Carrie: The Red Baseball Cap Girl Needs to Go.

Poor Carrie. I'm not sure where the girls in this movie come from, but if I was Carrie I would kill them all as well. I think a lot of people confuse Carrie as the villain in this movie. But the real villains are clearly these terrible girls and Carrie's mother of course. No one says Jesus Freak like Carrie's mother- that's for sure.

When Carrie misses the ball playing volleyball in gym class they all get angry and walk past her shouting obscenities. Blondie tells her to "eat shit". She missed a volleyball for christ sake. No one can play volleyball. And then she gets her period in the bathroom and they throw an endless supply of tampons and pads at her. There is graffiti on the wall everywhere that says Carrie White eat shit etc etc.... all because she doesn't talk to people? Jeeeezus.

Her mother though. Ack. What a psycho. Raving on and on about how the first sin was intercourse and making Carrie repeat certain Bible verses. Yeah umm I'm not sure if you know this but you had to have sex in order to have Carrie so maybe you should go and take a little time out in the Jesus box while you're at it.

Then there's Miss Collins who is a little too violent with her students. Slapping them, swearing, violently shaking them..why didn't anyone look into her violent streak? Also fatty with the glasses? Carrie gets made fun of and fatty with the glasses walks off scott free? And why does that one girl have to wear that red baseball hat EVERYWHERE. Honestly I'm pretty glad they all died.

So Carrie has telekinesis the ability to make objects move without touching them. Call her a fucked up Matilda if you will, her powers too ignite when she feels a particularly strong emotion. The whole movie leads up to an inevitable prank that will take place at the prom where certain students have rigged it so that Carrie will win prom queen. I'm sure most people know the prank- a bucket full of pigs blood falls all over Carrie. Everyone starts laughing-but are they really laughing or is it in Carrie's mind? Anyways she goes berserk obviously and uses her powers to lock everyone in the gym where they all burn to death. Good riddance.

One of things that creeps me out the most about this movie is all the Jesus iconography. The Jesus Room alone is the scariest thing on the planet, that one doll has those creepy eyes. Then the huge Jesus picture reflected in the mirror that Carrie breaks. There is just way too much Jesus and it may be the scariest part about this film.

I really feel for Carrie and her terrible life. Sometimes I wish she didn't bite it at the end- I wanted her to have a decent life for once. But no she has to get dragged down to hell with her psycho Jesus freak mother. Sigh. Oh well. A great movie nonetheless maybe with the Shining one of the best Stephen King novels to be taken to the big screen.

Wait Until Dark: Audrey Hepburn Picked a Bad Time to Go Blind.

Well after watching this I can confidently state that I can erase being blind from my list of things to try. Audrey Hepburn is amazing in this movie, and the suspense is truly something to be admired.

The film opens with an antsy lady waiting for an old man to sew up a doll. He tells her to be careful before she heads off to the airport. Once at the airport she spots a man in sunglasses waiting for her. Panicking she gives the doll to a man and tells him she will pick it up at another time. The man walks away with the doll in his bag as the woman gets carried away by the man in sunglasses.

Audrey Hepburn plays Suzy a recently blind woman and the man who received the doll- Sam's, wife. Unbeknownst to either of them the doll contains heroin and 3 men are trying to locate it. Once Sam leaves for a trip, the 3 men take action and poor Suzy must defend herself against 3 seeing men. The main suspense comes when Alan Arkin tries to kill her, and Suzy blacks out the apartment to level the playing field and to try to survive.

One of my favorite parts had to be after the men discover the woman from the beginnings body hanging up in the closet. Suzy comes home shortly afterward and the 3 men remain silent while she goes about her daily business. The way she just walks right by the men without knowing it gave me chills. Then she goes into the closet where the woman is now hanging out of the body bag, Suzy's body causing the dead girl's hair to blow a bit. It was really brilliant.

Then of course the ending is just nuts. I was somewhat prepared for the big "jump" moment thanks to Bravo, but I still jumped! And poor Suzy screaming and trying to unplug the refrigerator, the last bit of light in the entire apartment. It really was suspense at it's greatest. I read that when this came out in the movie theater's the cinema would black out certain lights in the actual theater. One by one lights would go off as Suzy smashed and unplugged the lights in the apartment, until the theater was submerged in complete darkness. I wish I had been there for that. I can't even imagine how much more suspenseful it would have been. And the whole time you are just thinking...I can't believe she is blind right now! Seriously, worst ailment to have when thugs are coming to get you. Poor luck I'm afraid. But a great movie.

Audition: She Wasn't Even That Hot.

Many people refer to Audition, as a movie that grosses them out more than anything. It took a while to work up the courage to watch this and I was on edge for most of it but only because of the anticipation of what I knew came at the end. Japanese horror films are not afraid to push boundaries and go places other don't. This movie definitely does that but really only towards the end.

The film is about a man who's son urges him to find love. His friend convinces him to "audition" women to be next wife, with the front that the women think they are auditioning for a role in a movie. The man becomes strangely drawn to Asami, a soft spoken shy woman. He is entranced by her story of once being a ballerina but was forced to give it up due to an injury. The man's friend warns him that he has a bad feeling about Asami, telling him that not one of the references from her resume could be reached. The man refuses to listen.

The scene switches to Asami, who is fond of sitting around her apartment on the floor next to the telephone waiting. A burlap sack sits closely beside her. When the phone rings the bag suddenly lurches. That is one of the many famous scenes that people talk about with this film. It sets up Asami's craziness quite perfectly. The man's friend was right but of course he doesn't listen which will turn out all the worse for him.

So the scene that I was referring to at the beginning may not be the one most people think of. In a flashback, Asami is finishing her dinner. She then promptly vomits into a bowl and then the contents in the burlap sack are revealed. A badly disfigured man crawls out as she lays the vomit bowl down and the man greedily laps it up. I who have an acute fear of vomit did not find this scene very pleasing. What's more is that in the trivia section on IMDB, it reveals that the actress who played Asami is a method actor. She insisted she actually vomit in the bowl. Of course I don't think the man really drank actual vomit but still......gross.

What most people refer to when they talk about this movie is the ending torture scene. The piano wire cutting off the man's feet, the needles stuck into his eyes, it's all very graphic and all very evident. Also a dog gets killed which once again ends up being the most disturbing thing to me...damn my sensitivity with animals.

But anyways what I find with this movie is that it is just a whole lot of anticipation. We know what the movie is leading up to, or if you don't, you do now. Everything that comes before it however is pretty much just snooze city. Sure we get a strong idea of Asami's character but even that takes a while to really become clear. If you want to be grossed out I would suggest using the fast forward button. Sure what comes at the end is quite brutal and disgusting but it still takes a long time to get there. Still a great source of shocking horror.

Here is a clip from Bravo's Scariest Movie Moments, and now that I think about it, it is pretty impressive that Rob Zombie gets creeped out by this as much as he does.
